The Oudezijds Voorburgwal  was dug between 1342 and 1380 and is one of the oldest canals of Amsterdam. The canal used to be called Fluwelen Burgwal (Velvet Rampart), referring to the wealthy families that lived here, usually dressed in velvet as a sign of wealth.  Almost all the housed have been restored to their original condition. Beautiful examples are the Leeuwenburgh (Lion Fortress) House, just next door.  Only a few steps further is Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder (Museum Our Lord in the Attic). This Catholic church dates from 1663, when it was prohibited to celebrate mass.
